This is the regular version of the flower done by most ballooners, however regular does not necessarily rimes with easy.

Indeed, all the basic techniques used to make this flower have been taught in preceding tutorials but the hand movement responsible for creating 6 petals in 1 single move may need some getting used to and a few initial tries. To make it easier, it will be better to inflate the balloon a little less than a little too much.

This is a two-fold tutorial starting with a detailed video tutorial followed by a step by step photo-guide.There is also a new comment section which you can use if you need some help regarding this tutorial.

Today, Môssieur Ballon will teach you... how to make a flower!

To make the petals of the flower, we are going to start by inflating a balloon all the way to the tip, without leaving any room at the end. However, once the balloon is fully inflated, we will need to let the air escape a little bit, to lower the pressure and soften the balloon. Then, by pressing the tip of the balloon, we can give ourselves a slightly wider margin, which we will attach to the balloon knot to form one big loop. Make sure the air pressure is evenly balanced all along the big loop.

Then, stretching the balloon like this, find the halfway mark on the loop, which needs to be exactly opposite the knot, in order to get two segments of equal length. Then, take the two segments together in your hands, being sure to divide their length into three parts as equal as possible.

Ok, now this next bit will be a bit tricky! With each of your hands, alternating each time, you need to press and twist the two segments around together as if you were making a regular bubble, except here, you're making 2 bubbles together, and on top of it your hands can't move entirely freely because they're working more or less at the same time on two different parts of the balloon.

Feel free to pause the video, try it a couple of times, you should get the hang of it eventually. Once you have your 6 balloon segments made, place them in a zigzag like this. Press, bring the 6 parts together, taking them between your thumb and forefinger, like this.

Next take 3 petals from the same side of the zigzag and twist them around their base, to keep all the petals together in place. Then, move away your thumb and forefinger, and arrange the petals more nicely. There... the hardest part is over!

Now let's take another balloon, green preferably, to make the stem. Inflate it leaving a margin of about three fingers, tie the knot, and evenly spread out the air pressure.

We're going to start with a tulip-twist. As a reminder, it's about pushing the knot back inside the balloon with your forefinger, you gently pull out your finger and finally, press and twist, to keep the tulip-twist in place.

Let's go back to the petals, stretching apart any two at random, in order to give us enough space to house the base of the tulip-twist up to the center of the petals. To minimize pressure and avoid one of either balloons bursting, you need to push the tulip-twist gently twisting it slightly, rather than forcing it all in one go.

Once the core of the flower is firmly seated in the middle of the petals, make a small little bubble, then a second one of the same size, which we'll make into a pinch-twist. The idea is that the petals of the flower should be the same length as the stem.

Control the air one last time... so that there's no room left in the remaining portion of balloon and the air pressure in it is evenly spread out. We are now going to make a zigzag with the remaining portion of balloon, and place our hand at the center of the zigzag. The last segment of the balloon, and the segment supporting the petals, should both stick out a little from the zigzag. Press and block the center of the zigzag, by pivoting each side of the zigzag, opposite to each other, with your thumb and forefinger.

Like this, we have formed, in one single motion, two loops of equal size which will form the leaves of the flower. Make sure the bottom and top of the stem are centered in the middle of the leaves. Give the stem a little curve so that its shape looks a bit more natural...

There it is! Say it with flowers! See you soon for another lesson... with Môssieur Ballon !

Step-By-Step Photo Guide

making a balloon flower, step 1
1- Inflate one balloon all the way, then let a little air out before tying a knot, so that the balloon is more supple and workable.
making a balloon flower, step 2
2- Make sure that air pressure is evenly balanced throughout the balloon.
making a balloon flower, step 3
3- Pick up the tip of the balloon and press it...
making a balloon flower, step 4
4- to push back a little air, in order to reclaim a short length of latex.
making a balloon flower, step 5
5- Bring both ends of the balloon together.
making a balloon flower, step 6
6- Tie both ends of the balloon together to form a large loop.
making a balloon flower, step 7
7- Bring each side of the loop flat against the other.
making a balloon flower, step 8
8- Find the middle of the loop, across from the knot, and form a crease.
making a balloon flower, step 9
9- Create two large bubbles at the level of this crease
making a balloon flower, step 10
10- You should get this shape. This next part will be a little complex; you will likely have to try several times before you get the hang of it.
making a balloon flower, step 11
11- Take the large bubbles together in your hands, dividing their length into three roughly equal parts. Alternating each of your hands, you need to press and twist both segments around their base as if you were making regular bubbles.
making a balloon flower, step 12
12- Only here, you're making two bubbles at once, and on top of it your hands aren't moving entirely freely, since they're working more or less at the same time on two different parts of the balloon.
making a balloon flower, step 13
13- Once the bubbles are shaped to your satisfaction, Arrange them in a zigzag shape, like this.
making a balloon flower, step 14
14- Hold one end in place with your support hand.
making a balloon flower, step 15
15- And compress the other end with your twisting hand.
making a balloon flower, step 16
16- The idea here is to bring the creases of the bubbles together, and thus fold all 6 bubbles to turn them into small loops (these will be the flower petals).
making a balloon flower, step 17
17- Ultimately, the support hand will have to grip all of the creases between its thumb and forefinger and be able to hold all 6 bubbles on its own. It's a bit physical, but it's doable after a few tries.

18- With the twisting hand, take the 3 loops from one end, and twist them together at the base of the folds held in the support hand.
making a balloon flower, step 19
19- Rotate several times until the petals are all supporting each other in place.
making a balloon flower, step 20
20- The petals are done, now let's work on the stem.
making a balloon flower, step 21
21- To make the stem, inflate a balloon, preferably a green one, leaving a margin about 3 fingers wide.
making a balloon flower, step 22
22- Start by making a tulip-twist.
making a balloon flower, step 23
23- Pull any 2 petals apart to insert the crease of the tulip-twist between them
making a balloon flower, step 24
24- To lower pressure and avoid either balloon bursting, you need to gently insert the tulip-twist forward in a few successive circular motions, rather than forcing it straight through in one go.
making a balloon flower, step 25
25- Turn the flower over and do the same with the rest of the green balloon, so that the bottom of the stem is also located right at the center of the petals.
making a balloon flower, step 26
26- Make two small bubbles one after the other.
making a balloon flower, step 27
27- Turn the second bubble into a pinch-twist.
making a balloon flower, step 28
28- The idea is to have the stem more or less in the same alignment as the flower petals.
making a balloon flower, step 29
29- Push the air back to the tip of the remaining length of balloon and make sure the air pressure is distributed evenly throughout its length.
making a balloon flower, step 30
30- Bend the remaining portion of balloon into a zigzag. The tip can slightly stick outside of the zigzag.
making a balloon flower, step 32
31- Press and block the middle of the zigzag in place and twist both sides of the zigzag in opposite directions. This gives us, in a single movement, two loops of equal length that will form the leaves of the flower.
making a balloon flower, step 33
32- Curve the top of the stem a little to give it a more dancing, natural-looking shape.
making a balloon flower, last step
33- Do the same with the bottom of the stem.
the balloon flower, once completed
There you are. You just made a beautiful flower, well done !!
