In What Order Do You Remodel a Kitchen?

SHARE

The first step in remodeling a kitchen is deciding what you want to achieve with the remodel. For example, do you like the current layout or do you want to change it? Does the entire kitchen need to be remodeled, or just part of it? What are the problems in your current kitchen that you’d like to fix? Have you always dreamed of getting a certain style of cabinets, a big kitchen island, or a chef’s stove? Once you’ve determined exactly how you want your new kitchen to look and function, you can move forward with your remodeling plans.

Make a Budget

The cost of kitchen remodels can range very widely based on multiple factors; just be sure to set your budget at a point that won’t force you to live on PBJs for the next few years. With our Design Agreement process, we can help you determine the scope of work and discuss your budget.  From there, we will discuss design, products, materials, etc!

Check Out Showrooms and Stores

Go visit stores, showrooms, and websites that carry the various materials you’ll need for your new kitchen such as flooring, lighting, sinks, cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and so on. Then make a list of the materials you’ll need to purchase, the best place to buy them, the price, and how long it will take to acquire them.

Hire a Contractor

Even if you plan to do most of the work yourself, you’ll need licensed, insured, and trustworthy professionals to take care of plumbing and electrical work at least, not to mention the many other tasks that might be too much for you to handle. Get at least three estimates and ask all the professionals you’re considering about their experience in their trade.

Demolition

Be prepared for a lot of noise and dust while the appliances are removed and the drywall, flooring, and cabinetry are ripped out. At this point, address any issues like plumbing leaks or bad wiring before continuing with the remodel.

Time to remodel

Now you’re ready to start adding new elements to your kitchen. Here is a general order of how the rest of the remodel should proceed:

  1. Determine where lighting, electrical outlets, sinks, and appliances will be placed and upgrade the wiring and plumbing to accommodate everything.
  2. Install insulation and drywall.
  3. Paint the walls and ceiling.
  4. Install the flooring.
  5. Install the cabinetry and countertops.
  6. Install the sink(s) and faucets.
  7. Install the light fixtures.
  8. Mount the backsplash.
  9. Bring in the appliances and hook them up.
  10. Clean up and enjoy your new kitchen!
