'I'm out. Officially': Prison Break's Wentworth Miller reveals he's turned down the chance to return for a sixth season as he doesn't 'want to play straight characters' anymore

Wentworth Miller has turned down the chance to appear in a sixth season of Prison Break, as he doesn't 'want to play straight characters' anymore.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday to discuss trolling he has received on social media about his sexuality, the actor, 48, slammed those with 'Stone Age values' for hitting out at him for being gay.

While he does get 'affectionate' and 'supportive' messages from fans, Wentworth felt the negative trolling he'd received proved it was even more important for him to tell queer stories rather than return to the role of Michael Scofield.

In a lengthy caption to a blank Instagram post, he explained: 'I'm not concerned for myself. I can't be "bullied" in this space. I have too much power. "Delete. Block. Deactivate." Etc.

'But I take seriously the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea... I don't want them exposed to b******t.

'On a related note... I'm out. Of PB. Officially. Not bec of static on social media (although that has centered the issue).

'I just don't want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told). So. No more Michael.

'If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons... I understand this is disappointing. I'm sorry.

'If you're hot and bothered bec you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one... That's your work. - W.M.'

Dominic Purcell, who played his brother Lincoln Burrows, shared his support for Wentworth's decision, saying in the comments: 'It was fun mate. What a ride it was.

'Fully support and understand your reasoning. Glad you have made this decision for you health and your truth. Keep the posts coming. .... love ya brother.'

Responding to the heartfelt message with one of his own, Wentworth said: 'Thanks, brother. Love you too. Onward.'

In September, Dominic appeared to confirm the show will return for a sixth season when he took to Instagram to share a cryptic post in which he responded to rumours he had heard.

He claimed Prison Break would return despite previous claims another outing wasn't in the works when he shared a picture of himself, and explained: 'Rumor number 1. I'm old. Yes. I'm 50.....

'Rumor number 2. I'm bald. No I have a full head of hair; the people demand I shave it.

'Rumor number 3, Will season pb 6 happen. Yes..... Rumor number 4. Do I like humans? No. Not on mass. Definitely not.'

MailOnline has contacted representatives of Fox Entertainment for comment.

Prison Break ran for five seasons with the first four airing between 2005 and 2009, before it was revived in 2017 for another outing.

The gritty drama focused on Michael's plan to help Lincoln escape prison after he was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit.

Season five was a sequel set seven years after the original show, and saw Michael return from the dead as he fought to get his identity back and take down Poseidon, the person responsible for his disappearance.

The limited series ended with Michael refusing to join the CIA so that he could live a normal life with his wife Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies) and their son Mike.

Despite Dominic's post, Fox Entertainment's CEO Charlie Collier shot down hopes for a sixth season in August 2019, as he said the channel had 'no plan' to make it.

He explained: 'There's no plan right now to revive Prison Break or any of the other franchises, but when the creators come with a story that they think is the right time to tell, we are so ready to listen because those are some franchises of which I'm so proud and feel so fortunate that they're in our stable.'
