Paris, France — Artist, creator of comic books, filmmaker, the works of Belgrade-born French artist Enki Bilal are shrouded in mystery, set in mysterious worlds, tinged with fantasy and science-fiction. His early works appeared in the French-language science fiction magazine Pilote and would be translated into English appearing in the cult publication Heavy Metal Magazine in which Mr. Bilal was a frequent guest starting in the 1980s. English titles of his cult works include Exterminator 17, The Nikopol Trilogy and Animal’z a graphic novel featured in Heavy Metal in 2012. Meanwhile his comic book albums have been published by Titan Comics amongst others.

An exhibition focusing in on 137 of the artist’s works is currently unfolding in Paris in the gallery spaces of the Artcurial auction house on the Rond Point or the very beginning of the Champs-Elysées. The works are taken from a number of the artist’s works including The Dormant Beast, Bug 1 and Bug 2, Four? and Rendezvous in Paris and feature haunting shades of smoky blue and ocher touched with red and midnight blue. But there is one thing that stands out over any other. The drawings are presented without their accompanying dialogues and without accompanying explanatory labels. So if you can’t be in Paris to see the show, The Gourmet Gazette brings some of it to you.

The show is fittingly entitled DeconstruKt . « I destroy, I implode a number of stories, » explains the artist. During a press conference prior to the official opening of the show he explained he would rather do the deconstruction himself rather than have others do it for him. The powerful drawings become even more so without their descriptions or dialogues. The art of Enki Bilal has been exhibited throughout the world. The show is running until September 9th. An exhibition devoted to his works is also being held at the cultural foundation of Hélène and Edouard Leclerc in Landerneau in Brittany until August 29th.
