Celebrity Beauty Watch: Meisa Kuroki
—
Meisa Kuroki is one of those women I didn’t think much of on first sight. She looked sort of girl-next-door and not too much of a stand-out.
While I can’t attest to her acting or singing abilities, I do enjoy her repertoire of songs (probably a testament to her A&R and Producers’ prowess more than anything else), and her under-stated, tanned, healthy-girl look (plus those amazing cheekbones) have slowly grown on me.
—
Elements to her look:
- Meisa always sports a natural-looking bronze complexion that does not look as fake or baked as the run-of-the-mill Hip Hop artistes from Japan. And she’s usually got a dewy sheen, which I love.
- Her lips are usually painted in soft neutrals and nudes in creamy textures, to play up the tan.
- She actually looks fierce. Literally. I love that she doesn’t have the usual “baby-doll” features in the ilk of Namie Amuro and other J-Pop stars. She doesn’t have large round eyes, an aquiline nose, or pouty, pillowy lips. And she looks fabulous!
- In Asia, where most smaller-eyed celebrities try too hard to alter the very shape of their natural features with heaps of dramatic eye makeup and liner, it’s refreshing to see a girl with elongated mono-lid eyes play up the shape instead of faking double-lids with lid glue or exaggerated contouring. (Her shadow seldom ever goes up past her actual socket line, and usually extends straight outwards for a sultry effect.)
- She’s not drowning in big, fat lashes most of the time.
- In terms of makeup, she isn’t as exciting to watch as a lot of other popsters, and she tends to play it safe in terms of colors and shapes, but occasionally, just occasionally… she can still surprise.
