New York’s Most Iconic Buildings, Free from the City’s Frenzy

Located in a busy cross section of the city, the Flatiron Building is almost always swarmed by pedestrians and vehicle traffic. Yankus, however, wanted to capture the historic landmark unobstructed. So he arrived at the one time New Yorkers still hold sacred—“I got up early on a Sunday morning, when no one was around,” he said, and removed all the other distractions in postproduction.

The Dorilton, with its intricate façade and Beaux-Arts architectural style, has been called “the most flamboyant apartment house in New York.” In this portrait, Yankus rids the streets of traffic but keeps the phone-wielding pedestrians, who are oblivious to the magnificence of their surroundings.

When Yankus moved to New York, this structure was a bank, and was most recently a men’s spa—a nod to this ever evolving, ever changing city.

A careful observer will notice that the clock in Yankus’s portrait of SoHo’s Haughwout Building reads 8:20. The portrait, just like the 19th-century building itself, is frozen in time.
