Kitty Hawk Hang Gliding

Nathaniel Abraham, III experiences hang gliding.

TRAVEL

Hang gliding for the first time was an amazing experience. I got to enjoy the exhilarating adrenaline rush of flight and the peacefully calm scenic views of the Outer Banks from the perspective of a bird is the perfect way to experience Kitty Hawk.

The Outer Banks of Nags Head, North Carolina is the home of Kitty Hawk Kite Hang Gliding. Even those who are nervous with heights have nothing to fear under the guidance of the expert guides. They were very friendly and have an infectious love of flight.

The tour starts with the standard waiver and rules. After the safety precautions are complete, we were taken on a brief but pleasant golf cart ride through a small vineyard leading to an all-grass runway filled with hang gliders of all colors. Anticipation built as the cart drove past other participants taking off and landing with excitement on their faces.

Upon reaching the runway, I was greeted by both the expert pilot and an instructor.

The instructor assisted with climbing into the lower half of the double-decker harness while the pilot prepared the ultralight aircraft that was going to tow us aloft. After the instructor strapped in, he briefly and thoroughly covered the instructions on how to control the hang glider. After one last safety check, the pilot connected his mini plane to our glider and towed us into the sky.

As soon as were airborne, I was able to look down and take in the beauty of Kitty Hawk from the sky. I saw the beaches receding into a limitless blue ocean extending to the horizon. I saw the marshlands hosting various clusters of wildlife and water that reflecting the golden glow of the sun. I saw the roads, buildings, and land as if I was looking down at a map.

After reaching the max altitude, the glider disconnected from the plane and the instructor took free rein of the flight. I got to experience various hand-gliding maneuvering techniques for catching wind, finding warm air for lift and for stationary flight. I also got to control the glider myself -- with the instructors help.

Towards the end of the tour, the instructor took control and began steering us back towards the runway. A few turns and a quick dive returned us back to earth with a big smile and an unforgettable experience.
