  • Microsoft is rebranding its Bing Chat to Copilot.
  • Powered by GPT-4, Copilot will offer personalized assistance.
  • The rebranding started with the September Windows 11 update.

Microsoft introduced Bing Chat, a new conversational AI chatbot powered by the GPT-4 language model from OpenAI, as a feature for its Bing search engine in February 2023. However, after only ten months, Microsoft is discontinuing the Bing Chat branding and transitioning to Copilot.

In its official blog post, Microsoft announced that it is streamlining the user experience and broadening access to Copilot by integrating Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise under the unified name Microsoft Copilot. This is being done to ensure that Copilot becomes a new AI companion for users that will be seamlessly integrated across Windows 11, Microsoft 365, and Edge.

According to Micrsfot, Copilot will offer personalised assistance tailored to users' work contexts, web activities, and current activities. It will be accessible as an app or via a right-click. "Copilot will uniquely incorporate the context and intelligence of the web, your work data and what you are doing in the moment on your PC to provide better assistance - with your privacy and security at the forefront," explains Microsoft.

Notably, Microsoft initiated the rollout of Copilot with the September Windows 11 update, and general availability for enterprise customers is anticipated during the fall season. Upon updating, users will notice the name "Copilot" replacing "Bing" in the Bing browser.

Microsoft is introducing several new features and devices alongside the rollout of Copilot. Windows 11 includes over 150 new features, including AI-powered enhancements to Paint, Photos, Clipchamp, and other applications. Bing will gain support for DALL.E 3 and provide more personalised search results based on user history.

Here are some of the latest updates included with Windows 11:

  • AI-Powered Creativity with Paint and Photos: Paint now harnesses AI capabilities to simplify background removal, introduce layer support, and provide a glimpse into Cocreator, a generative AI tool that elevates digital drawing and creative pursuits. Photos seamlessly integrates AI to streamline photo editing and discovery. The enhanced feature automatically identifies and blurs backgrounds, empowering users to effortlessly emphasize photo subjects. Advanced search functionality enables users to locate photos based on their content or location.
  • Enhanced Capture and Sharing with Snipping Tool : The Snipping Tool gains enhanced capabilities, allowing users to extract text from images, redact sensitive information, and record videos with audio.
  • Improved accessibility: To further enhance the accessibility of Windows 11, Microsoft is introducing new voice-activated text authoring tools and expanding the range of natural voices available in Narrator.
  • Windows Backup: Microsoft has also streamlined the procedure for Windows Backup, enabling migration to a new Windows 11 PC and facilitating the smooth transfer of files, applications, and settings.
  • Clipchamp Enhancements: Microsoft has also introduced new features to Clipchamp, including auto-compose features that offer suggestions for scenes, edits, and narratives based on images and footage. This feature streamlines the process of video creation and editing, making it easier for anyone to create professional-looking videos.
  • Notepad Upgrades: Microsoft has introduced a new feature to Notepad that automatically saves your session state. This means that you can close Notepad without any prompts or warnings, and when you reopen it, it will restore all of your previously open tabs, unsaved content, and edits.
