The ASUS series of motherboards – Republic of Gamers – doesn’t pull punches or performance with the Striker Extreme 680i SLI. The quad-core-ready Striker Extreme features the NVIDIA 680i SLI chipset with an northbridge core logic chip – engineered for high-power Intel processors and extreme overclocking – and southbridge controller chip, designed to manage mass storage devices, input-output ports, and expansion modules with efficiency and extreme speed. ASUS designed the Striker Extreme motherboard around an LGA775 socket made for Intel processors. Compatible Intel processor series include Celeron D, Celeron Dual-Core, Celeron Dual-Core Duo, Core 2 Xeon, Core 2 Extreme, Pentium 4, Pentium D, Pentium Dual Core, and Pentium Extreme Edition. The Striker Extreme’s NVIDIA 680i chipset’s SPP has an independent memory clock adjustment, which allows you to fine tune the Front-Side Bus clocks and memory clocks separately. The SPP supports NVIDIA’s SLI-ready Graphics Processing Units (GPU), which handles graphics processing separately from the CPU. SLI technology allows you to run two NVIDIA SLI-ready GPUs and operate up to two displays simultaneously. The board supports up to 8GB of DDR2 RAM. The ASUS Striker Extreme motherboard integrates a Crosshair series copper heat pipe that channels heat away from the CPU and to the Voltage Regulator Modulator (VRM) heatsinks, where it dissipates with the help of one or two (depending on your setup) motherboard fans. The brand’s Extreme Tweaker BIOS application provides a toolset that manages the motherboard’s over-voltage, frequency adjustment, and memory timing settings. The Striker Extreme’s integrated SupremeFX audio card delivers 192 kHz sampling in all available channels, producing premium sound quality in audio setups ranging from ear buds to 7.1-channel home theater systems. The DTS Connect feature converts any audio format – MP3, CD, and WMA, for example – into multi-channel output. The motherboard incorporates LED lighting throughout the board to make on-the-fly adjustments while gaming in the dark easy. The Striker Extreme also places LED lighting around the input and output ports to make connecting hardware and other external devices simpler. The Striker Extreme comes bundled with a host of software to build out your gaming to spec. Software includes The Gamer’s Benchmark, to check your rig’s performance, Kaspersky Antivirus, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, so you can start pushing your system against a 3D game that tests its capabilities as soon as you assemble it. ASUS also includes Futuremark 3DMark06 Advanced Edition, ASUS Live Update and ASUS PC Probe 2. The ASUS Striker Extreme motherboard storage interfaces include one UltraDMA (133, 100, 66, and 33), one 7-pin external SATA-300s and six 7-pin Serial ATA-133s. Expansion slots include two PCI 2.2 and one PCI Express x16 (at 8x speed), two PCIe x16 slots with NVIDIA SLI technology. BIOS (Award type) features include ASUS O.C. Profile, ASUS EZ Flash 2, ASUS MyLogo3, Multilingual BIOS, SMBIOS 2.3 support, DMI 2.0 support, and WfM 2.0 support. The board also has 10 USB 2.0 ports (six at mid-board and four ports on the back panel). The motherboard includes one each of the following cables: USB panel, DE cable, IEEE 1394 panel, floppy cable, SLI bridge, Serial ATA power adapter, and Serial ATA cable. The board has an ATX form factor and easily fits in full-size tower cases.
