Dioscorea elephantipes, a rare collection plant characterized by having a striking caudex reminiscent of an elephant's foot. Its stems and leaves are vine-type and it has a rest period in winter to sprout again in spring. We recommend growing it indoors with lots of light or outdoors as long as it does not suffer from frost.

Description

Dioscorea elephantipes, also called elephant foot, is a very special plant native to South Africa. It is a vine-type geophyte plant with a very curious caudex since its shape, texture and cavities are reminiscent of an elephant's foot. Its large leaves are alternate and cordate, bright green. Its flowering is made up of tiny white and yellow flowers. It has a rest period in winter during which it can lose its leaves until they sprout again in spring. It is a perfect plant to grow indoors or in greenhouses.

  • Irrigation: little or moderate, sensitive to rot if there is excess watering.
  • Temperature range: 20 - 27 ºC
  • Substratum: Loose substrate rich in mineral material, we recommend our substrate for cacti and succulents
