Description

Passiflora ‘La Lucchese’ is a delicate looking vine which has large, bright purple flowers. These flowers are topped with a crown of banded, long, wavy, very whimsical filaments. This vine is very free-flowering, and will bloom abundantly even at a very small size/young age.  It will bloom year round in a greenhouse, and may even produce buds if kept in a bright sunny south window over the winter. This ardent enthusiasm for blossoming makes this vine one of our favorites.

Passiflora ‘La Lucchese’ has bright green, three-lobed leaves and is a small, tidy vine making it quite suitable for planting in a container. The only caveat to container growing this vine is that it is a heavier feeder than many Passiflora varieties. You need to have a regular fertilizer regimen to keep the leaves from yellowing.

It will re-sprout from the roots if frozen back, however unlike many cold hardy Passiflora, it does not do so aggressively. We have only had it re-sprout from where the main stem was located the previous season. This feature might just make it the perfect vine for you if you love the flowers, but hate having vine suckers pop up all over your garden.

If possible you should plant this vine in full sun, however it will still bloom quite well in partial shade.

For each item added to your cart, you will receive 1 starter plant in a 2.5” pot. A photo example of the starter plants we ship can be found on our Ordering and Shipping FAQ page. The plants are well rooted and are ready to be potted into a larger container.

For those interested, Passiflora ‘La Lucchese’ is Passiflora ‘Fata Confetto’ x P. kermesina.

Hardiness Zone: 9 (maybe 8)

What does hardiness zone 9 (maybe 8) mean?

It means that this Passiflora is not as cold tolerant as some.  Most sources list it as being killed by freezing temperatures. If you are growing it outdoors, bring it inside once it starts to freeze.  While this variety will tolerate temperatures down to freezing, prolonged cold temperatures will kill it. Additionally, if you are keeping it in a pot you will need to completely protect it from freezing temperatures.

Maybe zone 8 means that our experience indicates that La Lucchese may be more hardy than many sources indicate.  However, we are not confident enough to say for sure it is zone 8 hardy. It has overwintered in our zone 8 garden several years, and has survived temperatures down to at least 15 degrees.  If you have a sheltered spot where you can plant it in the ground in zone 8, then its worth giving it a try. If you do, please let us know how it performs!
