The following list identifies the largest marine terminals specifically developed (or being developed) as container terminals at seaports across North America, based on their acreage. The Garden City Container Terminal in Savannah, Georgia is the largest single such facility in North America occupying an enormous 1,400 acres plus of land area (see image below – shown in gray).

Compare this single facility of 1,437 acres to other major seaports that have multiple container terminals on the list. These include:

  • Los Angeles/Long Beach (APM Pacific, Long Beach, Fenix, Pacific, TraPac, Everport, and Marina) = 1,962 acres combined
  • Houston (Bayport, Barbours Cut, and Freeport) = 962 acres combined
  • New York City (Newark, Bayonne, Staten Island, and Red Hook) = 706 acres combined
  • Seattle/Tacoma (Terminal 18, Terminal 5, Terminal 46, Terminal 30, and Husky) = 638 acres combined
  • New Orleans (International and Napoleon Avenue) = 465 acres combined
  • Vancouver, BC, Canada (Deltaport and Vanterm) = 284 acres combined
  • Montreal, QC, Canada (Viau, Acine, and Maisonneuve) = 166 acres combined

A minimum of 50 acres was required for inclusion on the list below. Seven (7) nations (when separating out Puerto Rico) are represented – the United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. Cuba just missed being included, as Havana’s Container Terminal is 45 acres in size. Peace!
