The Dog Movie was recently released in theaters. Inevitably folks will think they should have a Malinois as a pet. 99% of the population is not equipped to handle this breed. The result will be significant amounts of dogs being euthanized and / or sent to rescues. PLEASE do not watch this movie and assume that a Malinois is an easy breed to live with. These are working dogs and they need a job!! If not given a job, they will likely destroy your home and hurt someone.

The history of the Malinois breed goes all the way back to the late 1800’s in Mechelen, Belgium when they were called continental shepherd dogs. The Belgian Malinois first appeared in USA in the early 1900’s. This breed of dog is enthusiastic and quick, always wanting to be in motion, a working dog. They live for 12–14 years. It is a double-coated breed and sheds twice a year. They are commonly referred to as a “Mal” or “Mali”.

Mal-in-wah is that so hard?

The Belgian Malinois is made for herding, but also excels at protection, law enforcement, drug, bomb, search and rescue, agility, tracking, and can even be good therapy dogs. This is where some people may view the movie and get the idea of having a Malinois not knowing that they are demanding and need an experienced owner, having a wide range of temperament and aggressiveness.

If there is a waiting Malinois at your front door…. there are only 2 possibilities: Feel safe or scared as hell…

EXERCISE!

A Malinois has a surplus of energy and need regular exercise. Three walks a day with high-level activity should wear them out, if you cannot do this expect trouble! This breed is excellent for someone who would like their dog to join them on hikes, bike rides or jogs. If you do not see yourself as an overly active person or do not want to become one, the Belgium Malinois is not the breed for you!
