A bug commonly found in the moist forests along the Pacific coast is the yellow-spotted millipede, scientifically known as Harpaphe Haydeniana. These millipedes can be found along the coasts from Southeast Alaska to California. Yellow-spotted millipedes have long dark brown or black bodies with contrasting yellow spots down their sides. Millipedes are known for having multiple body segments, each containing two pairs of legs. Females usually consist of 31 pairs of legs while males have 30.
Yellow-spotted millipedes prefer damp and cooler environments like forests, woodlands, and gardens. Millipedes will often find a home underneath damp logs, rocks, or a pile of leaves. These millipedes will eat organic debris, such as leaf litter and decaying plants. This helps the ecosystem as they recycle contributing nutrients back into the soil.
While these insects are harmless to humans, when threatened, they will coil their bodies up, protecting their undersides. They can also release hydrogen cyanide into the air, deterring predators. The concentration of hydrogen cyanide is generally not enough to harm humans, however, it is recommended to avoid contact and to wash your hands if you come in contact with one. Whether these insects are harmless or not, they can still become an annoyance, especially if there is an invasion near your home.
The best thing to do to avoid millipedes near your home is to reduce as much moisture from your home as you can and to seal any potential entry points. You can do this by fixing any leaks found in or near the home, ensuring that your home has good ventilation and that all potential entryways are sealed and patched. Caulk is a great solution for sealing any cracks or gaps that millipedes could crawl through.
Another option to try when it comes to protecting your home from millipedes is to remove any attractants. Millipedes are drawn to decaying plants. Keep the surrounding of your home free of debris, piles of wood, and mulch. These organic materials make up a millipede’s diet and will attract them near your home. Even though mulch is a popular option to surround your home with, you may consider using stones or gravel around the perimeter of your home. Gravel and stones prevent lasting moisture and will deter millipedes from entering the home.
Like any bug, it is important to keep the exterior and interior of your home clean. Dirt, trash, and moist areas will often attract bugs into your home. If you spot any millipedes inside your home, use a vacuum or a broom to remove them. You can either relocate them outside or dispose of them.
