The Silent Tower is the headquarters of the order of sorcerers known as the Silent Ones. It is also called the Tower of Silence, the Lonely Tower, or merely "the Tower," as the Silent Ones refer to it.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Composed of blue-grey stone that is not native to its surrounding environs,[2] the Silent Tower stands hundreds of feet tall without base or support upon a featureless plain. It is visible from many miles away in every direction.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Uhas of Neheli's Chronicle of Secret Times claims the Tower's construction predated the arrival of the Neheli in the Sheldomar Valley of the western Flanaess. Mages reckon it beyond the engineering capabilities of the present age, as it must have required great sorcery for its construction.[2]
In recorded history the Silent Tower has only been besieged once, in the "first century of the migrations," when Suel sorcerers of House Malhel stole many artifacts and scrolls before being driven off.[2]
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Silent Tower is less than a day's ride south of Niole Dra, the capital of Keoland, in the Sheldomar Valley. Most southerly traffic from Niole Dra takes the River Road to Segor; the Tower Road comes no closer than 1,000 feet of the structure and is only knowingly taken by those deliberately seeking the Silent Ones.[2]

Rumors & legends[edit | edit source]
Collections of the rarest books and scrolls in the Flanaess may be found in the Silent Tower, some of which have been kept in its archives since the Twin Cataclysms. These are reportedly stored high in the Tower in a windowless collection of chambers called the Sanctum Maleficarum, inaccessible to all but the most senior Silent Ones.[2]
The Tower is said to descend into the depths of the earth, though its subterranean complex was constructed in a more recent era than the Tower itself. Rare copies of Uhas' text mention a well at the bottom of these levels called the Cenotaph which even the Silent Ones avoid.[2]
