Darwin, the tropical capital city of Australia’s Northern Territory

About Darwin

Darwin is a small Australian city with a population of about 150,000 people. As the northernmost capital city of Australia, Darwin is very close to Southeast Asia. It is closer to more international cities than Australian ones. Considered a melting pot of people and cultures, Darwin includes Aboriginal and Islander Australians, descendants of European settlers and Asian migrants. Migrants from Asia have been instrumental in establishing the city, and its communities from Philippines, India, Nepal and Japan continue to grow. Darwin is a completely unique city compared to other cities in Australia. Northern Territory retains the wild and pure nature. However, Darwin is still a very modern city surrounded by Australia’s incredible wildlife ecosystem.

Weather

Darwin has a tropical climate with a distinct dry and rainy season, and the average maximum temperature is about 35°C all year-round. The dry season lasts from May to September, in which almost every day is sunny and the humidity in the afternoon is about 30%.

Living expenses, renting a house

The cost of renting your accommodation is the second largest amount of money (after tuition fees) when studying in Australia. In Darwin, the rent is about $160 / week / room. If you rent an apartment/house with 3 bedrooms, it is about more than $400 /week.

Due to the hot weather all year round, air conditioners are used frequently. But rest assured, the price of electricity in Darwin is considered to be the cheapest in Australia. According to the experience of a friend living in Darwin for a long time, the electricity cost is about $ 750/3 months for a 3-bedroom house. There is no gas in Darwin, so the cost of electricity is considered not high.

Public transport

In Darwin, buses are the only public transport. Student fare for the whole day is $ 2 (too cheap compared to Melbourne and Sydney). Students under 18 are free to use.

Because the population is not very crowded, there are not many bus routes. Owning a car will help you travel easier, especially for exploring this beautiful land.

Main industries (industries)

Regarding Business and Industry, Darwin is described as Australia’s gateway to Southeast Asia. Darwin is closer to the Indonesian capital Jakarta than Canberra. The majority of Darwin’s workforce (about 60%) work for the Government. Darwin is also the main service centre of leading industries such as mining, offshore oil and gas production, pastoralism, tourism and tropical horticulture. The Port of Darwin is also the main outlet for Australia’s export of live cattle to Southeast Asia. Since Darwin is so close to Asia, there are promising opportunities to grow the international education sector, tourism, mineral, gas, petroleum, fisheries and agricultural resources which are high demand in Asia.

Part-time job opportunities for students

Tourism is the most employment-generating industry in Darwin. Darwin attracts tourists from all over the world. This creates many job opportunities for international students in cafes, restaurants, hotels and resorts. On summer holidays, students can live and work on the farm.
